Chronic Pain, Spasticity & Dystonia

Although chronic pain affects nearly one in three Americans and is the nation’s leading cause of medical suffering, it is often poorly understood, misdiagnosed, and ineffectively treated. Chronic pain can be caused by damage to the brain, spinal cord or nerves—often as a result of a surgery, disease, or accident. Chronic, systemic pain requires expert, customized and comprehensive treatment solutions to effectively address its debilitating effects.

Our program begins with in-depth counseling sessions to identify each patient’s unique needs. Los Angeles Neurosurgical Institute specialists then map out a custom treatment plan and closely monitor our patients’ progress. Our treatment programs reflect a comprehensive approach to pain treatment and include specialized medical management, implanted pain pumps, surgical intervention, and stimulation of the periperal nerves, spinal cord, cerebral cortex and deep brain. We also partner with neuropsychologists, physiatrists and other specialists to ensure holistic treatments are prescribed to those in our care. We stand at the crossroads of innovation and compassion and believe that patients deserve access to cutting-edge practices to help relieve their pain.

Cancer Pain

Regrettably, cancer pain is often grossly under-treated and patients suffer unnecessarily when solvent and effective options may be available to bring about real relief. Elite pain specialists at the Los Angeles Neurosurgical Institute work tirelessly to curb this trend and to comfort patients in their care. Sometimes cancer pain goes untreated because physicians are under-educated and therefore do not recommend pain therapies readily available through cancer pain specialists. Alternately, patients are sometimes reluctant to request advanced pain relief because they do not wish to burden their care providers and assume cancer must simply be endured in pain. Patients may also fear addiction or side effects—unaware that when treating legitimate injuries and disorders, pain medications have a very low incidence of addiction. When effectively managed by an informed specialist, side effects can be minimized or eliminated with ongoing and consistent dosing. Our pain management team uses an array of tools to control cancer pain, including implanted pumps and nerve blocks. Combating unnecessary myths, we offer a fundamental alternative to cancer pain.

Spasticity

Patients who experience spasticity as a result of multiple sclerosis, stroke or spinal cord injury may benefit from medication delivered via an intrathecal pump to improve muscle tone and to reduce spasm. Highly-refined medications can be delivered to patients through an implanted pump and monitored closely by our pain and movement disorder specialists to enhance their quality of life. In some cases, our specialists will perform rhizotomies to achieve similar results in patients who are not candidates for drug therapies.

Dystonia

Dystonia is characterized by an involuntary muscle contraction which causes body parts to twist uncontrollably in affected patients. Living with dystonia can be challenging and its symptoms may interfere with a patient’s daily tasks. Ranging from mild to severe, dystonia types are categorized broadly by specialists into two groups depending on the age of onset. For patients whose muscle contractions begin in youth, their dystonia type is often inherited and the entire body is typically affected. In most cases, however, dystonia occurs in older individuals and tends to affect one body part only—primarily the neck, face or hand. Los Angeles Neurosurgical Institute specialists offer an assortment of treatments for dystonia, including botox injections, selective denervation therapies, and deep brain stimulation to redress involuntary muscle contractions.
